Kevin Smith, Headmaster
A 26-year veteran of private independent education, Mr. Smith began his career teaching science, physical education, math and reading at the Lawrence School in Cleveland. Having served as a teacher, coach, division coordinator, Dean of Students, Admissions Director and Assistant Head of School, Smith became Headmaster at Phillips-Osborne School in Cleveland in 2004. Joining Denver Academy as the Headmaster in 2008, Mr. Smith’s educational philosophy is deeply rooted in equity for all learners and differentiating instruction so that each student achieves to his or her best.
Education/Experience: B.S. from the University of Dayton, Physical Education and Biology, Magna Cum Laude; M.ED. from Bowling Green State University in Applied Physiology and Biomechanics.
Lori Hull, Head of Lower School
Lori Hull has been at Denver Academy since 1984 and has served as the Lower School Head since 2004. During her tenure, she has taught high school and elementary school, worked as Director of Admissions and coordinated the Elementary Division.
Ms. Hull received her degree in Elementary Education/Special Education from the University of Northern Colorado. She thinks the best part of her job is getting to know our awesome students.
Dan Loan, Director of Admissions and Communications
Dan Loan has been at Denver Academy since 1978 and is an integral part of the school community. Starting as the school's first intern, Dan has served DA in many capacities including teacher, division head and Dean of Students.
Mr. Loan earned his degree in Education from the University of Northern Colorado.
Mark Twarogowski, Associate Headmaster and Director of Education
Mr. Twarogowski has served in a number of roles in his 20+ years at Denver Academy. He taught at the high school level for five years before taking a position as the Head of the Middle Division for nine years. He then served as the Dean of Lower School and Director of Curriculum and Instruction before taking his current position as Director of Education and Associate Headmaster.
Mr. Twarogowski holds a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Denver and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Education Leadership at DU.
Berni Vilkus, Director of Finance
Mr. Vilkus has been employed at Denver Academy since 1999, working as the Business Manager and now the Director of Finance. He handles the finances for the school and manages the operations of the business and the accounting offices. He also oversees the Building and Grounds and IT departments. Previously, Mr. Vilkus worked in the financial and accounting areas for various distribution businesses (electrical and plumbing/heating).
Mr. Vilkus received his Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from the College of Charleston.
Mark Wood, Head of High School
Since 1989, Mark Wood has been a fixture at Denver Academy. He served as a teacher in the elementary and high school before his roles as High School Dean and now Head of the High School. Prior to his experience at DA, Mr. Wood worked as a counselor at a residential child care facility and as a drug and alcohol counselor.
Mark earned his B.S. in Human Rehabilitation Services and his M.A. in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Northern Colorado.
