Your child’s well-being is always a priority, and we are closely monitoring the situation with the H1N1 virus as it continues to evolve. Below is more information on our plan as well as information on how to prevent the virus and what you should do if someone in your family becomes infected.
You can also download a PDF of this information here. Proactive Steps Denver Academy is Taking: - The most effective way to prevent the spread of both the traditional flu and H1N1 virus is good hygiene. We are encouraging all students, faculty and staff to use proper hand washing techniques.
- Classrooms and common areas will be disinfected on a regular basis and hand sanitizer will be available in these areas as well.
Ways You Can Help Prevent the Spread of the Flu: - Government recommendations emphasize the importance of the basic foundations of flu prevention:
- Stay home when sick.
- Wash hands frequently with soap and water when possible.
- Cover noses and mouths with a tissue when coughing or sneezing (or a shirt sleeve or elbow if no tissue is available).
- It is projected that a vaccine for the H1N1 virus will be available this fall. We do not know at this point how the vaccine will be distributed, and we will share this information with you as it becomes available.
In Case of Additional Cases at Denver Academy: - We notified you on September 8 via phone and e-mail that a student in the Prep High School has been diagnosed with H1N1. As stated, this student will not attend school until symptoms have subsided.
- We anticipate that there will be additional infections at Denver Academy, and we will contact you again if we anticipate disruptions to our schedule or closure of the school. We will work to balance the risks of flu in our community with the disruption that dismissals will cause in both education and the wider community.
- Please be aware that if your child develops symptoms of H1N1 (such as fever, vomiting, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue), you will need to pick him or her up as soon as possible.
- Should your family have a specific concern related to the H1N1 virus, please contact us at health@denveracademy.org or 303-777-5870.
If a Member of Your Family Becomes Infected: - Please alert us to a possible or confirmed infection as soon as possible. Please contact us at: health@denveracademy.org or 303-777-5870.
- Those with flu-like illness should stay home for at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever, or signs of a fever, without the use of fever-reducing medicines. They should stay home even if they are using antiviral drugs.
- To help limit the spread of the virus, students who have an ill household member should stay home for five days from the day the first household member got sick. This is the time period they are most likely to get sick themselves.
