Well, that was fun, wasn’t it? Last Thursday, backed by the most complete performance so far this season, the Mustang Boys Varsity Team beat Rocky Mountain Lutheran by a score of 68-49. Everything that has been a struggle for the team so far this season was a strength in this game, whether it was offensive or defensive, and the Mustangs continued their strong start.
The usual suspects, Riley Allen and Luc Stanley, both showed up on Thursday with 20-point games (23 for Allen, 22 for Stanley). It was the first game for the Mustangs where they made the layups coming back after getting defensive rebounds. The Mustangs were 27/55 from the field, for an above-average percentage of 0.49.
Defensively, the Mustangs were lights out. Thirty-two of the Rocky Mountain Lutheran Eagles’ 49 points came from two players, and the other 17 came from the rest of their roster. Once again, Owen Beams played very well on defense, and his offense was getting a bit better, and he got his first chance from the free-throw line. Overall, free throws are still a struggle for the Mustangs with the team going 9-13 (69%) from the line. Luc Stanley and Riley Allen each were better in this regard, with Stanley going 4-5 and Allen going 3-4. The depth pieces on the Mustangs also got their say in this game with Harrison Dority putting up nine points and several others getting their first varsity minutes of the season.
The Mustangs continue to make their presence known in the early portion of the season, and just like last year, they have had a hot start. Although the challenging portion of the season awaits them after winter break, the Mustangs can be proud of how the early part of the season has gone
